Ash Weds!!

Today I somehow made it to my Ash Weds service this morning at 7 this morning! I was able to get up at 6:15 this morning, yet yesterday morning I slept past my alarm and did not awake until 11. But what ever.  I really enjoyed the Episcopal service more than Catholic one I went to in Alva twice.  The service was very solemn and I missed not having any music, but it is needed for the huge celebration for Easter later!  I've had a rather difficult time deciding what to do for this year's season on lent.  I decided this morning to give up desserts & any sweets as well as not eating out.  I also thought I might try to start reading the Bible everyday again.

It was funny this morning on campus because I swear everyone was starting at me as I walked by trying to figure out the ashes were on my forehead.  I had thought that since OU's campus is so large there would be some people with ashes on their head, but I only saw one boy by the library (which I smiled larger when I saw him, so I probably freaked him out a bit) and my business calc professor also had ashes on his forehead.  In Arabic one of my friends came up and started rubbing the ashes, asking what was on my forehead. I sort of laughed and told her it was Ash Weds and she stopped at started apologizing. I just laughed again and told her it was fine.  I figured my Arabic professor would ask about it since he is so inquisitive and gets sidetracked a lot, but he didn't say a thing! Well I better head to Stat!

I'm watching "the sound of music" and realized HOW hopelessly romantic I am.  I've been close to tears a couple of times and I'm not even on the second tape yet!! just thought I would through that out there..........i'm not sure anyone will even read this. lol! i'll write a better post some other time.

so i guess i just write once a month now!

well just in case anyone ever wondered, I was filling out a question for a scholarship application just a second ago and I think I came up with the best way to describe what I want to do in life! so here it is! Just in case you wanted to know!!!!

Getting a degree from the University of Oklahoma has been my dream since I was a young child, due to my love for learning and through enjoyment of school. I plan on completing my bachelor degree from the University of Oklahoma in International Studies during May 2009. After that I plan on joining the Peace Corps for the standard two year program and from there either continue my education with a graduate degree in International Relations or go to a medical school to become a licensed pediatrician. Once I complete all of my formal education, I plan on spending my life improving the lives of children around the world. I want to set up an orphanage and school in the Middle East somewhere to provide these war-torn children with hope, good health, and an education. While my professional aspiration is not very tangible by most people’s standards, I believe these children of future generations, due to the knowledge and wellbeing received during childhood, will bring death to the vicious cycle of terrorism and poverty that has engulfed that region of the world.

Well...............................yes its been awhile! OU is going great! I've actually been keeping pretty busy. I started studying for my test last week that are weds and thurs (resulting in the confirmation of being a nerd by quite a few people!!). I've had so many things I’ve wanted to write about. One day I’ll write all about my Arabic class.......but tonight I’ll just write my first word I learned in Arabic (its read right to left!!!)  Xanga won't support the Arabic font so i'll just write the word phonetically.  Baahb.

So my ONLY problem I’ve had here is making friends. At first I was just really shy, but I realized my problem is that I know enough people here that I want to just hang out with them. Most of my friends that live here are ones that I haven’t hung out with regularly all of last year. I also have a cousin (that I never knew very well) calling me quite often to go do something with her. While I really love getting to know my cousin better and hanging out with some of my friends more…….I really do want to meet some new people. Its just SO hard make myself go to awkward situations to meet people, when I could just be comfortable and hang out with my friends.

Isn’t that how a lot of us are??? We would always like to just do what comfortable and easy……I am slowly getting to know some people and enjoying it! I also did something new this morning and went to an Episcopal church……..and guess what! I really liked it. I’ve never really enjoyed church services that have a lot of liturgy, but the priest was amazing. I always thought after growing up Baptist that church that used liturgy seemed TOO uptight and unfriendly. This church body was really neat and the music minister mentioned a hand bell choir which I think I might join. I just felt like this church is where I belong! It was such a neat feeling. (I do have to admit the one thing I don’t like is the use of real wine in communion. I’ve only had alcohol twice in my life both at communion and I really don’t like it!!!! Lol!) Well I need to study a bit! I’ll try to write my next post sooner!

Ironies, Humor, Items of Interest, and Annoyances

Just some things I noticed around campus the first three days! I tried to make them exciting. Well there they are!!!

Ironies

˜    Well both of my suite mates are named Ashley or Ashleigh

˜    My roommate’s hometown of Pittsburgh makes Norman seem small (while OU has a larger enrollment than my hometown!!)

˜    The “free papers” they hand out on campus actually are free after they talk to you FOREVER on your way to class

˜    The “freshmen community” signs on my all upperclassman floor door.

Humor

˜    My American History, Professor Dr. DeSpain, was going to end our first day of lecture with an episode of The Simpsons (tech problems prevented this from happening….)

˜    The Signs on the wall in the basement of Walker for the bathrooms and laundry look like this

˜    The people with good intentions are handing out tracks to students on the way to class. This track is called “when the wine runs out” and focuses on Jesus’ first recorded miracle in John (the water into wine). This campus is an EXTREMELY dry campus due to the accidental death a couple of years with blood alcohol poisoning.

Items of Interest

˜    The long line in the bookstore actually goes through REALLY fast.

˜    I have 3 classes with 150+ students. (that’s more in one class than my graduating class in high school!!!)

˜    If my interview goes well tomorrow, I might be an “event photographer”!!!

Annoyances

˜    I don't like having 4 of my 5 classes in Dale Hall. I would like to walk around campus to them. (I know I’m weird)

˜    I’ve been sick for almost a week now. (I’m feeling much better today! Thank you LORD!!)

˜    I’m finding myself being rather shy and I don’t like it (I haven’t been shy since 7th grade!!). It’s hard making friends when you’re shy.
